Bourbon and horse racing are Kentucky's figureheads. But the 'Bluegrass State' has a lot more to offer: as a hub between the regions of the USA, it combines the charm of the southern states with the dynamism of the north and wild nature with urban culture.

Kentucky forms the border between the midwestern United States and the southern states and is known for the Central Kentucky region. The rolling hills of the Kentucky Bluegrass, with their grass pastures blooming blue-green between March and April, have given the state its nickname "Bluegrass State".

Landscape diversity

Kentucky is characterized by landscape diversity. In the east are the Appalachian Mountains, in the west the huge lakes and rivers and in the southwest extensive plains. This is also where the Trail of Tears runs, the route the Cherokee Indians used, which (like most Indians in most of the southern United States) had to leave their country in 1838. At that time, they were forcibly driven out of the fertile southeastern woodland of the USA into the barren Indian territory in what is now the state of Oklahoma.

Attractions

The state has other well-known attractions, such as the Kentucky Derby, the horse race in Louisville that takes place in early May and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The Visitor Center with lots of information about the 16th President of the United States is also worth a visit.

In Louisville you will find the Muhammad Ali Center, which tells about the career of the famous boxer with interactive exhibitions and captivating multimedia presentations.

Outside the city there is a mysterious stone fortress from before Columbus. According to theories, it was built in the 12th century by the Welsh explorer and presumed first colonist of America, Prince Madoc.
