The Principality arose in 1297 when the
Grimaldi genus occupied the area. It later ended up in
rounds under various foreign rulers. Monaco became
independent in 1861, though closely related to France.
The First World War escaped the Principality, but it was
occupied during the Second World War. The Grimaldi
family has remained Monaco's ruler.
During the 5th century BC, the Greek colony of
Monoikos was built on the site of today's Monaco. The
location was also an important port during Roman times.
