"The Ocean State". The landscape is very much shaped by the sea, its residents
love the Atlantic and their life is determined by it.
Those who want to do water sports are in good hands here. Rhode Island offers a
variety of water activities, such as swimming, fishing, sailing, canoeing or
kayaking.
Golf is also very popular in the small state. Many golf courses offer a
wonderful view of the sea and the fascinating landscape of Rhode Island.
In contrast to the flat landscape, there is even a ski area in Rhode Island. It
is located in Diamond Hill State Park. Admittedly, it is quite small and will
certainly not be a bestseller with us, but it rounds off the sports offer in
Rhode Island.
An interesting city in Rhode Island is Newport. Here is the oldest synagogue in
the USA, the Touro Synagogue, which is now considered a symbol of freedom.

Newport, Rhode Island
Once an important commercial center and home to America's richest
families, Newport is now a popular vacation destination. Take tours of the
famous manor houses and discover the “golden age” of the city or the modern
pulsating metropolis.
Newport is located in Rhode Island and was founded in 1639. Even before the
American War of Independence, the city was prosperous because its convenient
location between the emerging cities of New York and Boston served as a stopover
for merchant ships. The city is known for its shipbuilding and as the first
significant Jewish settlement in the area of the British colonies in North
America, of which the Touro Synagogue, built in 1763, still testifies. Newport
was partially destroyed during the American War of Independence and was never
able to return to its original economic importance.
During the 19th century, many rich Americans built their summer residences
here. The magnificent villas, such as "The Breakers" and "Rosecliff", can be
visited on a tour today. The annual highlights are the music festivals "Newport
Jazz Festival" and "Newport Folk Festival". A sight that led to numerous more or
less serious speculations about who might have built the building is the Newport
Mill. This stone-built building stands in a small park on Bellevue Avenue, in
which there are also other colonial buildings you can see.
