Connecticut is the southernmost of the New England states and, as the third smallest state in the United States, still has a lot to offer. For hikers, the Litchfield Hills, the highest low mountain range in the state in northwest Connecticut, are a fabulous destination. The “Appalachian Trail”, a 3,450 km long long-distance hiking trail that leads over the highest peaks of several states from Georgia in the south to Maine in the north, presents fantastic views of the hilly landscape.
The port city of New Haven is best known for its famous Yale University. On campus you can take an informative tour or visit one of the interesting museums.
You should also not miss a trip to the capital Hartford. There you should take a guided tour of the Mark Twain House. The creator of the novel heroes Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer lived and worked here. You can also find out more about his life and work in connection with American history in the associated museum.
You can take a real trip back in time every year in October. A three-hour steam train ride from Essex to Chester and a subsequent steamboat ride on the Connecticut River through an enchanting autumn landscape will take you back in time.
Connecticut awaits you with a warm, temperate and maritime climate with snowy winters. The temperatures rarely reach extreme values here. The best time to travel is from May to October.

Mystic, Connecticut
Mystic is a unique open-air museum and attracts thousands of visitors from near and far every year. With its historic ships and interactive exhibitions, Mystic knows how to delight every holiday maker.
The small town of Mystic used to be an important port for ships from all over the world. The historic village from the 19th century is a popular destination for locals and tourists. In its world-famous museum, the Mystic Seaport, immerse yourself in the time when large sailing ships cruised on the world’s oceans. On several old ships you can let a breeze blow your nose and on the last wooden whaling ship, the “Charles W. Morgan”, you can experience for yourself how it must have felt as a crew member on such a ship. If you want, you can also try yourself as a captain on a small rowing or sailing boat or take the “Sabino” steamship on the Mystic River.
Explore the interactive exhibits in Mystic and see how staff maintain and service the ships. After the sailors in Mystic have demonstrated their skills on the ships before your eyes, you can listen to the chanting of the Chanteymen. But there is more to see in Mystic. For example, you can watch stars in the Treworgy Planetarium, stroll through the beautiful gardens or attend one of the many events and shows.
