Azure water, bright sunshine, heavenly beaches and attractions for the whole family – in Florida, the “Sunshine State” of the USA, vacation dreams come true.
Experience miles of white sandy beaches, fantastic shopping on the palm-lined boulevards, colorful buildings in the art deco metropolis of Miami Beach and of course a tropical climate with almost 365 days of sunshine a year. In addition, the huge theme parks, such as B. Walt Disney World and the Universal Studios around Orlando, Florida become one of the most attractive vacation spots for families in the United States. If that’s not enough, you can live out your thirst for adventure in the endless swamps of the Everglades National Park with their fascinating flora and fauna.
The selection of dreamlike beach areas in Florida is almost inexhaustible: you should not miss the exotic landscapes of the Keys with the colorful underwater world off the south coast of Florida. Divers in particular can have fun here in the fourth largest living continental coral reef in the world. A little further to the northwest, the Paradise Coast inspires with unique beaches, fashionable cities such as Naples, Fort Myers or Bradenton- and the rare manatees on the Florida Gulf Coast. Anyway, the Florida Gulf Coast is a dream: in the deepest northwest of Florida, on the border with Alabama, you will find further dream beaches, southern flair and emerald green water in the so-called Florida Panhandle. Of course you will also find great swimming paradises on the Atlantic coast, such as the unique Playalinda Beach at the Canaveral National Seashore east of Orlando.

Florida Keys, Florida
Between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic lies one of the most picturesque regions in the entire United States – the Florida Keys. Over 203 kilometers an impressive chain of more than 200 coral islands runs through the Atlantic Ocean off the southern tip of Florida. The islands have a wonderfully warm climate all year round and fantastic beaches invite you to do all kinds of water activities. The Keys have some of the best diving spots in the world, ahead of Dry Tortugas, for example, is the third largest tropical coral reef in the world. Due to the Gulf Stream, which brings warm water from the Caribbean to the north, the water is wonderfully warm all year round and is a habitat for numerous exotic species.
The Florida Keys offer you countless ways to explore them. For example, you can travel comfortably by car. Until 1935 the islands were still connected by a railway line. The old bridge now offers anglers and walkers an exceptional platform. Today, the Overseas Highway connects 40 islands of the Florida Keys, including the 5 main islands of Key West, Big Pine Key, Marathon, Islamorada and Key Largo . Among other things, you will travel over the fascinating almost 11 kilometers long Seven Mile Bridge. The bridge has become world famous through numerous cinema appearances in films such as James Bond: License to Kill or 2 Fast 2 Furious. For the more adventurous among you, various boat and kayak tours are regularly offered. A special highlight is the boat tour in the Haireviere or a kayak trip through the mangrove labyrinth of the mysterious and less explored islands.
The Florida Keys also have a lot to offer culturally. The writer Ernest Hemingway was under the spell of Key West for a few years from 1934. In his former home there is now a museum that you shouldn’t miss as a literature fan. The annual Key West Craft Show and the many painters who submerge the beach passages in wonderful colors are a further delight for all culture lovers. The beautiful sunsets in the late evening are particularly worth seeing.

Festivals & events on the Florida Keys
Key West Race Week
Key West: At the end of January, sailing fans from all over the world flock to the “Sunshine State” to witness the first major regatta of the sailing season. Be there when over 40 teams dive into the turquoise blue sea of the Keys and fight for the title in fantastic weather.
Conch Republic Days
Key West (April – May): The residents of the Florida Keys (the “Conchs”) celebrate the 34th anniversary of their “Conch Republic” – the world’s first “Fifth World Nation”– with a lot of humor. The Conch Republic declared its independence from the United States on April 23, 1982, in protest at a US government checkpoint on the Overseas Highway that regularly caused long traffic jams and made tourism difficult; which was revoked the next day. Under the guise of the national celebration, diversity is celebrated here for 10 days in the spirit of satire!
Humphrey Bogart Film Festival
Key Largo: In May, the Florida Keys pay homage to Humphrey Bogart, one of the greatest icons of American cinema, at Key Largos with a film festival. Whether in the cinema or under the stars of the Gulf of Mexico, Key Largos will present Bogart’s most famous films such as “Casablanca”, “The Night of the Falcon” and of course “Gangsters on Key Largo” during the festival.
Key West Pride
Key West, June 7th – 11th, 2017: True to the motto of the former Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, “I’m gay, and that’s a good thing.”, Key West celebrates all types of PRIDE. Key West and the residents of the Keys are known for their laid-back lifestyle, respect, non-discrimination and acceptance. Experience how one of the most integrative and unique communities in the world celebrates all forms of life – and join in now!
Hemingway Days
Key West, July 18-23, 2017: Hemingway lived, worked and fish on Key West for several years. In his honor, a festival is organized annually, with amusing competitions such as the search for the best “Hemingway lookalike”, but also readings, book signings and a marlin game fishing – the fish that Hemingway so much admired.
Underwater Music Festival
Lower Keys, July 7th – 8th, 2017: Dive through the only living coral reef in the continental USA and enjoy matching songs such as “Yellow Submarine” by The Beatles. The music is played into the water through loudspeakers on the hull of various boats and provides you with the perfect soundtrack to the visual stimuli under water. You shouldn’t miss the “underwater air guitar competition”! An event that wants to point out the protection of the reef.
WomenFest
Key West, September 7th – 11th, 2017: On the weekend of Labor Day, women gather from all over Key West and enjoy the open-hearted atmosphere and some of the island’s incredibly good margaritas.
Fantasy fest
Key West, October 20-29, 2017: Every year at the end of October, Key West turns upside down for 10 days: The Fantasy Fest is Cologne’s Carnival of the Caribbean, the Mardi Gras of the subtropics. The colorfully dressed “Jecken” roam the city streets during numerous parades. Costume competitions, great street food, body painting and much more make the time of the Fantasy Festival unforgettable.
Key Largo Bridge Run
Key Largo, November 10th – 11th, 2017: Every year numerous hobby and professional runners meet to compete in brilliant sunshine on the Overseas Highway near Key Largo. Look out to sea during the run and enjoy the wonderful panorama of Florida Bay and Barnes Sound.
New Years Eve Shoedrop
Key West, December 31, 2017: New Year’s Eve tradition is one thing. In New York, for example, there is the “Ball Drop”, in which a gigantic ball slowly wanders down a pole in the last seconds before the turn of the year. Key West has had its very own “Ball Drop” since 1996: An oversized red high-heel shoe with drag queen Gary “Sushi” Marion lowers from the ceiling of the Bourbon St. Club and thus starts the new year in the most eccentric way. A tradition that has meanwhile got around across the borders of the small island.
