Macon, late March / early April: The only drawback of the International Cherry Blossom Festival is the date of the festival. Because, depending on the temperatures, the cherry sometimes begins to bloom at the end of February, but also only in mid-March. However, one thing is certain: when the time comes, over 300,000 cherry trees will transform the city of Macon into a white sea of fragrant, delicate cherry blossoms. Imagine Music Festival

Cartersville, Georgia
Cartersville is a short drive from Atlanta. The city in northern Georgia is a true Southern jewel: close enough to the Atlanta metropolitan area for quick shopping, far enough to be calm – and at the same time the gateway to the mountains of northern Georgia. But the city with 20,000 residents also has a lot to offer for its size.
Art & culture in downtown
Stroll through the numerous shops and boutiques. Enjoy a break in the pretty restaurants and cafes and visit the theater and some historic churches that give Downtown Cartersville its unique charm. The Booth Western Art Museum is a highlight in the city center. The museum deals with the American West, its settlement, the Indian culture and the untouched natural beauties – and is the largest art collection on this great topic in the entire USA. Take a look at exhibits by Charles Russel, Albert Bierstadt or Karl Bodmer, artists who have dealt with the conquest of the West and the consequences. The exhibition organizers are continuing to spin the thread in other galleries – from the American Civil War to the subject of “The Wild West” in pop art and film. Unique is the Presidential Gallery, which houses handwritten letters from and entertaining facts about all previous US presidents. The original stagecoach and an interactive gallery for children on the topic of working ranches are also special. The museum is considered one of the most exciting in the state and houses the largest permanent exhibition for Western Art in the USA on 11,000 m².
Other destinations around Cartersville
A few kilometers east of Cartersville is the Red Top Mountains State Park, where you can go hiking in wonderful scenery. In the south of the city you will find the Etowah Indian Mounds State Park, which, in addition to excellent places for a cozy picnic, also offers a glimpse into the past of the region in an adjacent museum. Another museum highlight of the city is the Tellus Science Museum, where especially the little ones will have special fun. The Battle of Allatoona Pass has gone down in history as one of the bloodiest battles in Civil War. Today, at the place where the battle took place on October 5, 1864, you can still see some original trenches and monuments. Over 600 cinema and television productions later and almost 80 years after the box office hit for Clark Gable, Georgia’s film industry is booming more than ever: Whether current series productions such as The Walking Dead, superhero blockbusters à la The Avengers or love stories in the vampire universe of the Vampire Diaries – produced in Georgia Film has never been as diverse and successful as it is today. In honor of this success, the Year of Georgia film was celebrated in 2017.
From green tomatoes to forrest gump
In Georgia, today you can both visit some of the most iconic places in the United States’ film past and be there when potential new classics emerge. Take a seat in Savannah on the legendary park bench where Forrest Gump told passers-by his life story, which ultimately won six Oscars, or have a fried green tomato at The Whistle Stop Cafe in Juliette, about 40 km north of Macon. Covington, about 50 km southeast of Atlanta, is visited by tens of thousands of vampire fans every year, just like the heroes of their favorite series The Vampire Diaries, through Covington, which is called in the series Mystic Falls. Here, among other things, scenes for Ein Duke rarely come alone and shot The Walking Dead.

Speaking of The Walking Dead: Admirers of the post-apocalyptic zombie series will be delighted by the small town of Senoia, approx. 50 km south of Atlanta. The series is distributed throughout the city, at Nic and Norman’s producer Greg Nicotero and fan favorite Normand Reedus (“Daryl Dixon” in the series) serve their favorite dishes – and at The Woodbury Shoppe you can buy and become unique souvenirs of the series original props on display. In Atlanta and at many other locations in Georgia you can also admire original locations of one of the most successful series of all time.

Macon Film Festival
Macon, mid-August: Surrounded by a great supporting program consisting of live music and lots of southern culture, the Macon Film Festival celebrates independent film from around the world in various cinemas in Downtown Macon.
Atlanta Underground Film Festival
Atlanta, mid-August: The Atlanta Underground Film Festival offers the upcoming stars of the film industry a stage in the city’s Synchronicity Theater. During the three-day festival, which is part of the four-month Atlanta Film Series, you have the opportunity to see films by many previously unknown filmmakers.
Savannah Film Festival
Savannah, late October: The Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, brings the brightest brains of independent and innovative film to Savannah. Everything from two-minute short films to feature films is represented here. There will also be interesting rounds of questions and answers on the topics of film, television and digital media business.
Golden Isles, Georgia
Nestled between Savannah and Jacksonville, the Golden Isles are picturesquely encamped off the Georgia coast. In front of the historic city of Brunswick, St. Simons Island, Little St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island and Sea Island run like a chain of golden pearls through the turquoise-blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Mild winters, natural, miles of sandy beaches, beautiful marshland as far as the eye can see, maritime evergreen oak forests, historical sites and a rich wildlife population make the region a popular holiday destination.
Jekyll Island
The southernmost of the islands, Jekyll Island, is a charming paradise for families. Spend a few relaxing days with your loved ones and explore, also by bike, the unique landmarks and the endless sandy beaches of the island. Numerous hotel complexes ensure pleasant accommodation – the breathtaking nature takes care of the rest. Super rich people like JP Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer or William Rockefeller used Jekyll Island as a relaxation oasis. The Jekyll Island Historic District and the pompous Jekyll Island Club Hotel testify to the glamorous time. Driftwood Beach offers itself in the soft morning or afternoon light and ideally at low tideas a photo backdrop. Spectacular large driftwood trunks are washed up here, which line the extensive beach area. A visit to the sea turtles at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center is also a must.
St. Simons Island
St. Simons Island, the largest island of the Golden Isles, can be reached from Jekyll Island via Brunswick and some bridges in around 40 minutes. The poet Sidney Lanier immortalized the characteristic salt marshes of the island in his poem “The Marshes of Glynn”. In fact, the marshland on St. Simons Island no longer leaves your side. On the way to the more touristy south you drive through the dreamlike alleys of the island, the oaks of which are often completely covered with Spanish moss. Check out the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and Fort Frederica National Monument. The historic Christ Church, Fredericanot to be missed from 1736. From the north side of the island, trips to Little St. Simons Island, which can only be reached by boat, are also possible.
Sea Island
The somewhat more northern Sea Island is a Mecca for all golfers and luxury vacationers. The Cloister on Sea Island and The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club are two of the world’s most exclusive resorts on Sea Island. The Seaside Golf Course is the home of the PGA Tour RSM Classic and has an absolute professional level. Membership is required to access Sea Island Company facilities.

- Driftwood Beach
Driftwood Beach in the northeast of Jekyll Island is like a driftwood cemetery. The toll of erosion that is slowly but surely eroding the north of the island has created this unique beach area. A great place for unique photographs, especially at sunset, and a trendy spot for weddings. - Jekyll Island National Historic District
The Jekyll Island National Historic District offers 33 historic buildings spanning approximately 1 km². Around the main building, the slightly decadent Jekyll Island Club Hotel, you will find numerous wonderfully preserved and well-kept houses. Learn everything about the exciting history of Jekyll Island and be amazed by the beauty of the architecture. - Georgia Sea Turtle Center
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center was founded to protect the sea turtle. The Center’s mission is to raise awareness of rebuilding a healthy turtle population on Jekyll Island and to nurture sick turtles. Here you can see many of the cute sea creatures, watch a feeding and get a lot of interesting information. - Simons Lighthouse Museum
The St. Simons Lighthouse Museum on the island of St. Simons is a nice little museum right on the lighthouse of St. Simons. Take a look at the lovingly restored buildings around the lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper’s apartment, and enjoy the final view from the top of the lighthouse over the impressive island world of the Golden Isles. - Fort Frederica National Monument
Around 1735 Georgia was in the epicenter of a centuries-old quarrel between the British and French that continued on the newly discovered continent. James Oglethorpe, the unofficial founder of Georgia, had Fort Frederica built to protect its borders, i.e. the borders of Georgia, against the French. Today there are only a few foundations left of the fort, but you should definitely plan a visit to the historic site.
