Washington DC is the capital of the United States and is also considered the political capital of the world, due to its status as the seat of the United States federal government and for having institutions of international relevance, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Its importance also reflects in tourism, being one of the most visited cities in the world, with more than 20 million tourists per year.

All three branches of the US Federal Government are centralized in the District: US Congress (legislative), Presidency (executive) and US Supreme Court (judicial). Because of its political and economic importance, there was a myth that the city was a boring and serious place. However, that view has been destroyed over the years.

In addition to being a young city because of the large student community at Georgetown University, Washington is home to many historic monuments and the best museums in the country, which are located mainly around the National Mall, a huge national park. It is important to note that many museums are free, which will save you a lot in your stay in the city!

The capital of the most powerful country in the world offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere and different types of attractions for all tastes. The city has become a good place to enjoy international cuisine, do great shopping, enjoy a vibrant nightlife and enjoy outdoor activities, as 21% of the capital is covered by parkland.

If you want to see the city even more lively, plan to go for the cherry blossom season, that is, at the end of March. The National Cherry Blossom Festival is Washington’s premier event and attracts thousands of visitors each year. In the summer, the capital also remains busy, offering several events for the whole family. Attractions range from musical shows to open-air cinema sessions.

How to get

From Brazil there is only one direct flight to Washington. This route is operated by the airline United States, which departs from Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo. However, if you are looking for cheaper tickets, you can opt for flights that make stops that are usually made in a city in the United States. Since Washington is on the east coast of the country, some of the stopover options are New York, Miami and Atlanta.

The capital of the United States is covered by three airports: Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), which is the main destination for international flights and is 40 km from the center, Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA), the closest to the city, being just 9 km from the center, and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), which is further away, about 50 km from the center.

If you leave Brazil for Washington, you will probably end up with the city’s largest airport, Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), located in Dulles, Virginia. The cheapest way to get out of the airport and into the city center is via a bus called the Silver Line Express, which leaves the Arrivals area and leaves passengers at the Wiehle-Reston East (Silver Line) subway station.

However, if you do not give up comfort, an alternative is to make the journey with a van, also known as a shuttle, which performs the journey with fixed values. Although it is a more private and comfortable service, the disadvantage is that it costs more than the bus and can take you more time to arrive at your hotel, since the van takes more passengers and delivers each one to its destination. As a last resort, there are also several taxis parked in the Arrivals area, but as the airport is about 40 km from the center, this ride can be very expensive!

Night life

The intense political activity in the city and the large concentration of university students make Washington have a vibrant nightlife, with numerous bars and nightclubs. As politicians go out to unwind after a busy day at one of the most important political centers in the world, Washington’s Happy Hour is taken seriously! Virtually all bars have some kind of food and drink promotion between 4pm and 7pm. In Downtown, Capitol Hill and Dupont Circle the night starts early and ends late, so make no mistake!

In U St Corridor there is a long strip of bars, in addition to some jazz houses and shows of other musical styles. To see a classic jazz show, just walk through this region from Thursday to Saturday. Ivy City is the neighborhood of cocktail bars and also good craft breweries. It is the ideal neighborhood for those who like to taste different drinks.

As it is a city full of young university students, there are many night clubs. Adams Morgan, Georgetown, Logan Circle, Downtown, U Street, Columbia Heights and Dupont Circle are some of the regions where there is fun for all tastes, with ballads ranging from rock to techno, in addition to a huge variety of bars. Dupont Circle and Capitol Hill are areas where LGBT audiences meet, especially on weekends.

If your plan is to take a more leisurely evening stroll, no problem, as Washington offers options for all ages and styles of travelers. Many of the monuments and memorials around the National Hall are open 24 hours a day and are even more beautiful at night due to the special lighting.

You can also enjoy a family night out at National Harbor, a complex with several restaurants, ferris wheel, skating rink and other attractions. Speaking of restaurants, in Washington you can taste cuisine from all over the world! Take a stroll through Penn Quarter and Chinatown to experience something new.
