During the 9th century, Monaco was established in the Burgundian kingdom and in the 11th century the city fell under the rule of Genoa.
The Principality was created during the Middle Ages. In 1297, the city was occupied by the family of Grimaldi who had fled during the civil war in Genoa. Since then, Monaco has been ruled by the Grimaldi family with some stops.
Between 1482 and 1525 the area was a French protectorate. From 1525 to 1641 the Spaniards ruled over Monaco, which then formed an alliance with France but otherwise served as an independent state.
During the French Revolution in the late 18th century, Monaco was occupied by French revolutionaries who abolished the principality and established a republic. In 1793, Monaco was incorporated with France, but when the French emperor Napoleon fell in 1814, the Grimaldi family was able to return and reestablish their rule over Monaco.
The economy is improving
The following year, Monaco came under the patronage of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Monaco regained its independence in 1861, but with close ties to France. Four years later, a customs union was established between the countries. Already at this time, the prince had decided to increase Monaco’s revenue through gambling activities that attracted wealthy tourists, and the Monte Carlo casino was founded. The economy improved, and from 1869 the monegas no longer had to pay taxes.
In 1911, under Prince Albert I, a constitution was adopted which meant the establishment of a parliament and the absolute power of the prince.
During the First World War, Monaco managed to stay neutral. After the war, an agreement was concluded with France, which stipulated that Monaco would become part of France if the prince died without leaving a male heir (in 2002, however, a female succession was introduced).
During World War II, Monaco was first occupied by Italy and in 1943 by Germany. A year later, allied forces in southern France landed, and Monaco was liberated.
