The country’s economy is heavily reliant on agriculture, which accounts for around 40% of GDP and employs about 80% of the labor force. Agriculture is an important sector in Mali with cotton being the most widely grown crop followed by millet, sorghum, peanuts and rice. Livestock is also an important economic activity with cattle and goats being the most widely raised species followed by sheep and pigs. The majority of agricultural produce is consumed domestically while some products are exported to other countries for sale on international markets. Mining is another major sector in Mali with gold being the most important mineral extracted followed by bauxite, iron ore and uranium. Other minerals extracted include copper ore which is exported to other countries for processing or sale on international markets. Manufacturing is also a significant contributor to GDP with food processing being the most important industry followed by textiles production, construction materials production and electronics production. Agriculture has been a mainstay of the Malian economy for centuries, and has played a vital role in sustaining the population of this West African nation. The earliest settlers in Mali were believed to have been agriculturalists who practiced traditional methods such as slash-and-burn agriculture and simple fertilizers. These early farmers would have grown crops such as millet, sorghum, rice and maize as well as some legumes and vegetables. In the late 19th century, the French colonial government began to introduce more advanced agricultural techniques such as irrigation systems, mechanization and fertilizer use. This helped increase yields from the limited land available for cultivation in Mali, and helped make food production more reliable in times of drought or other natural disasters. Today, agriculture is still an important part of life in Mali with around 80% of the population living off it. It is responsible for around 25% of GDP and is mainly subsistence farming with smallholder farmers producing cereals such as millet, sorghum and maize for their own consumption. In addition to this there is also some livestock farming with cattle occupying a significant proportion of land area. In recent years there has been increased emphasis on diversifying agricultural production in order to ensure food security for the country’s growing population while also providing sustainable income opportunities for farmers. Efforts are being made to reduce reliance on rain-fed agriculture by introducing irrigation systems as well as new technologies such as mechanization which can help increase yields from fewer resources. There is also increasing focus on agroforestry initiatives which combine traditional tree crops with short-term cash crops, helping to maintain soil fertility while also generating income for farmers.
